Whilst Myanmar Antique’s comprehensive range of Buddha’s vary in age from 80 to 800 years, they share one common feature: They are all casted on the basis of century old methods and traditions where a mold containing an alloy of predominantly bronze as the prime material is used. Some very elaborate crafted images may take months to finalize and contrary to mass produced reproductions the mold is destroyed after firing, hence each image is one of a kind!
You will also find that the surface (patina) of each Buddha looks different which is due to many factors mainly ‘’wear and tear’’ as well as human touch and the exposure to climatic conditions, but as importantly the composition of the individual alloys i.e. composition of f.inst. copper and silver, hence some surfaces appear more reddish and light.
Without exception all Buddha images serve a religious purpose and some have originally been very heavily gilded, but with aging the gilt has slowly disappeared, however, some worshippers have applied a new layer of gold whereas other images only depict traces of the original guilt as owners have opted to admire the lush of the original patina.
The foundries employ a host of various craftsmen to care-take the various steps of the casting process, however, only the most gifted and experienced craftsmen were assigned when expensive materials like bronze and copper were used. Although their tools appear primitive in to-day automated World, they are still in use by the generation of old, but waning craftsmen.
