On the basis of a picture the artisan carved/copied the features of the image and the Buddha was subsequently either gilded or painted . Buddhas in wood were made for people from all walks of life. Conditions of an antique wood Buddha will vary substantially depending on where it was kept/worshipped, - inevitably nature will take its toll, and most ancient images are found with cracks and fissures and the gilding and paints disappeared. Buddhas with inscriptions (name and date) were mostly commissioned by the wealthy. The extremely large and rare Buddhas found in most Pagodas in Myanmar have been donated by wealthy worshippers.
