Alabast Buddhas
Alabaster, - the magical and smooth white and translucent ’’stone’’ composite is found in mountainous areas in the Northern Myanmar. As alabaster is a very expensive material, only the most skilled artisans were assigned to carve the very sought after and precious Buddha images. The images were subsequently gilded and or painted and antiques Buddhas still show signs of the original gilding/paint. On rare occasions we find images with inscriptions which in most cases are the name of the person for whom the Buddha was made. Virtually all the Buddhas in the world famous Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon are carved in Alabaster.
